Quartersawn Movingui

Quartersawn Movingui

With quartersawn wenge and abalone shell inlay.

Native to the rainforests of West Africa, Movingui is prized for its luminous golden color and silky natural sheen, a quality that has earned it the nickname “African satinwood.” Freshly worked, the wood ranges from pale yellow to deep honey gold, gradually mellowing with age into a warmer, richer tone. Its glow is inherent to the wood itself, not the result of stain or dye.

Lightweight yet surprisingly durable, Movingui has long been valued in fine furniture, cabinetry, and interior joinery, where its stability and fine, even texture allow it to perform reliably despite its brightness. The wood machines cleanly and takes a polish exceptionally well, contributing to its refined surface and soft, reflective shimmer.

Though typically straight-grained, Movingui occasionally reveals a dramatic figure when conditions are right. The Movingui selected for this box is particularly exceptional, displaying uncommon curly grain and vivid color—features rarely seen together in this species—elevating the piece beyond the ordinary and giving it a depth and movement more often associated with far rarer woods.
